Moving halfway across the world (perhaps to a country you’ve never visited before) to start studying for a postgraduate degree is a challenging experience. Such a process is not only about academics, but also adapting all aspects of your lifestyle. Here are some tips to not only survive, but thrive from the very start of your time living and studying in the UK:

1)   Healthcare Arrangements

As part of your immigration application, you will have paid for access to the National Health Service (NHS). Most NHS treatment (excluding dentistry) is free at the point of delivery, including emergency treatment and seeing a doctor (GP). One of the first things you should do when you arrive, however, is registering at a local surgery (GP clinic) which is essential if you need to see a doctor at any point or require any prescription for medication.

 2)   Academic Integration

One of the most important things to do when you arrive is to make sure that you are familiar with and connected to your university life. That includes registering your institutional email, finding out who your academic advisors are, and any campus support available to help you settle in.

3)   Practical Living

Not only should you know where your closest supermarket is to buy groceries but also make sure you give yourself enough time to buy a phone SIM card and also discover public transportation options where you are studying. If you are at a campus university, also taking time to discover all of the facilities available early on will put you in a strong position before the busy academic term starts.
